Beacon Bible Camp is a non-profit organization that exists to provide an adventurous Christian camping experience where people, particularly youth, can be encouraged to respond to the gospel of the Lord Jesus and to grow in their Christian life.

Full Time Food Services Manager - Position Available

Beacon's year-round staff are committed to a long-term vision of growth and excellence for our camp's ministry. They manage the day-to-day operations, facilities and administration. They also provide oversight of the seasonal volunteer staff. This allows the volunteer session staff to focus on the most important job: making sure that campers have a great week, and become closer to God as a result of their time at camp. The full time staff will be expected to maintain a healthy daily walk with the Lord. An active involvement and membership in a Bible believing Christian Church, Chapel or assembly is also expected.

Beacon's year-round staff serve at camp as servants of the Lord desiring to see the mission of camp accomplished to the glory of God. Each must be aligned with Beacon’s Mission and Statement of Faith.

They are remunerated by Beacon Bible Camp. All staff at Beacon are supported financially by individuals and churches who believe in the mission of Beacon's ministry via donations to Beacon Bible Camp or Friends of Beacon Ministries


Food Services Manager

Our current Food Services Manager, Susan, plans to step down from the role in late 2023. The successful candidate would start as soon as possible in late 2023 to allow for significant orientation overlap. Susan will make herself available to support the successful candidate during the transition and at the beginning of the summer in 2024.

This full-time position works at Beacon Bible Camp, in Torrance Ontario, The successful candidate must be Muskoka based and is needed to be available onsite most days during the summer season.

General Responsibliites

Beacon’s Food Services Manager is responsible for the oversight of food service at camp, including menu planning, kitchen staff management and regulation compliance. The Food Services Manager will also be responsible for liaising with families, staff and outside groups, to provide a safe and nutritious experience at Beacon Bible Camp.

The Food Services Manager assume specific responsibility for providing efficient and smooth operation of the food services during all Beacon activities, such as camp sessions, rentals, and other events. They will also assume the following general responsibilities for:

Menu Planning, Preparation and Delivery

  • Plan and oversee healthy, appropriate menus for all sessions, events and rentals, following standards set by the Canada Food Guide.

  • Ensure that food inventory reflects menu requirements, while placing timely and accurate food orders with food providers and being present to direct food order deliveries.

  • Communicate with families, rental groups and staff, regarding identified food allergies and dietary restrictions.

  • Oversee the daily quantity, taste and temperature of meals and ensure that food is served well in a timely fashion.

  • Develop and implement inventory control systems to maximize savings and minimize any waste.

  • Update recipes, menu offerings and manuals to reflect the ongoing camp sessions.

Volunteer Staff Management and Development:

  • Provide supervision and direction to food services staff daily during camp sessions, including rental groups as required.

  • Communicate with the Executive Director for Beacon’s camp sessions regarding kitchen needs, special food items and other requests.

  • Recruit and communicate effectively with volunteer head cooks and kitchen staff to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen during camp sessions.

  • Meet with and train other cooks to ensure that they are confident and comfortable with their work before, during and after their time of service at camp.

General Administration

  • Ensure that all food services equipment and facilities are ready for activities.

  • Identify and lead the maintenance of kitchen equipment and make necessary changes and purchases to reflect food service’s needs.

  • Monitor the food services budget to ensure efficient delivery of programs.

  • Ensure a high standard of cleanliness and organization of kitchen and dining room as well as all equipment, including freezers and fridge.

  • Participate as a member of the year-round staff and provide support to the other team members, including staff meetings, times of devotions and prayer, and other professional development activities.

  • Attend workdays, staff or general meetings and other staff events, as required.

  • Liaise with the local health unit inspector to ensure that Beacon Bible Camp passes all required kitchen inspections.

  • Welcome rental groups and make sure they are settled at camp, on a rotating schedule with other year-round staff.

  • Assist in general housekeeping tasks as required, including cleaning, purchasing décor items for the kitchen and dining hall,

Competencies Required

The following set of attitudes, skills, knowledge and techniques are important qualities in all our kitchen staff members. In particular, we require that the Food Services Manager at Beacon Bible Camp:

  • Be aligned with the Beacon’s mission / vision and passionate about camp ministry.

  • Show a friendly disposition reflecting the mission of Beacon

  • Have knowledge and experience in working and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness in a large commercial kitchen, including experience cooking and baking for large groups.

  • Maintain a safe, sanitary workplace while meeting all health regulations, camp policies and Ontario health & safety requirements.

  • Recruit, train and supervise food services staff, such as the volunteer cooks at Beacon.

  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, showing initiative and independence, while being able to work well within an often fast-paced team setting.

  • Show enthusiasm for working with and around young people, while demonstrating tact and poise as they learn.

  • Be comfortable using technology, including online ordering systems in the area of food services.

  • Work well with others, including campers, families, session staff, year-round staff, board members and other stakeholders.

  • Demonstrate good organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask, including planning multiple weeks of camp sessions simultaneously.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding campers, staff and their family food related issues.

  • Possess the following certifications, clearances and training: police check with vulnerable sector screening, driver’s license, food handler certificate and health and safety training, as required by camp policies and health regulations.

Reporting and Working Relationships

The Food Services Manager reports to the Executive Director and works closely with other year-round staff. Experienced members of the Board of Trustees provides general oversight as required. The Food Services Manager also works closely with Summer session staff and volunteers..
