Calling All Camp Crew!

Alyssa LaRocque

STAFF APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN! I have been so excited for this announcement because staff application time means summer camp is coming! The onsite team desperately missed having campers and staff milling around Beacon last year, and although we know that anything could happen before this summer, we are moving forward with plans to have campers onsite!

To make sure that we are inline with expected government restrictions, we are looking for a totally different kind of staff team in 2021. In fact, it’s going to be so different that we’re giving this year’s staff team a whole new name. Read further to learn more about our 2021 Camp Crew!

Usually a small lifeguard and maintenance team is the only staff that remains at camp all summer alongside the onsite team, and a new set of volunteer staff arrives every week to fill the program and kitchen positions. However, this year we need to have a full set of summer-long staff so that we best comply with COVID safety protocols. This means that we have summer positions not just for maintenance and lifeguards, but also for program, kitchen and office, amounting to around 18 Camp Crew members.

Because there will be more staff, the accommodation plan changes too. Aholiab and Bezaleel, our faithful summer staff cabins, will be used for other purposes. Instead, Camp Crew will all be housed together by gender in two different lodges. That way each staff group will have their own bathroom facilities and a common lounge to provide a place to relax and participate in community while maintaining distance from campers. The constant presence of community can be a challenge, but it is also what makes being Camp Crew so unique and unforgettable. The staff community that develops will create lifelong memories together!

Another change is the schedule. Many normal Beacon sessions end on the same day that the next session starts, which means a crazy changeover day of cleaning for summer staff. However, this summer sessions will start on Sundays or Mondays and end on Fridays, giving the Camp Crew more time to clean and sanitize properly, and also allowing for a full day off in between sessions.

One final note is that candidates for Camp Crew must be 18 years old by the end of June in order to apply, which differs from the past few years when we accepted staff who were turning 18 in that calendar year. We also want to be clear that although 18 is the minimum age, it is not the only age group we are looking for! We would be delighted for candidates of any age who have a heart for camp ministry to apply.

Despite so many things being different, the reasons why we think you should come to Beacon as a Camp Crew remain the same! It’s an amazing way to develop new skills, incredible friendships, and new depth in your relationship with God.

We know that you may have a lot of questions, and we encourage you to reach out to us. Check out the dates and role descriptions at www.beaconbiblecamp.com/camp-crew or contact Alyssa LaRocque at staff@beaconbiblecamp.com.
